The development of the ALTAY tank began in 2007, and the first prototype was presented five years later, in 2012. Since then, the tank has undergone several modernizations and improvements, particularly in terms of mobility, protection means, and firepower.

The production of the ALTAY tanks is being carried out by BMC, one of the largest manufacturers of armored vehicles in Turkey.

BMC is responsible for designing, developing, and producing the tank, which includes an unmanned fire control unit. The ALTAY program is divided into two phases: T1 and T2. T1 covers the first 250 units, while T2 involves the advanced version of the tank.

The latest version of the ALTAY tank is powered by a 1500 hp BMC Power BATU V12 V-twin 12-cylinder engine, coupled with a transmission. Initially, there was an agreement with South Korean companies to work on the power unit of the tank.
